Cities in the Mediterranean need to change and develop to overcome growing difficulties and adapt to the increasingly knowledge-intensive economies.Cities need to become ‘smart cities’. The “Smart Cities in the Mediterranean” Strategic Partnership aims to work for ‘smartering’  cities in the Mediterranean region by sharing resources, knowhow and experience.

The Partnership  is formed between multidisciplinary organizations;  research centers, industry,  innovative SME’s, civil society actors and other stakeholders to integrate a range of planning approaches as well as tools and enabling technologies that can support participatory-oriented city- and citizen-specific urban planning studies, capable of dealing with sustainability challenges that are faced by cities today.

The scope of the Partnership is to identify, develop and deploy replicable, balanced and integrated solutions in the energy, transport, and ICT in select pilot cities in the Mediterranean region.

European and Mediterranean cities, although different from each other, they have similar needs that can be tackled best through a common approach.  The “Smart Cities in the Mediterranean” Partnership will focus on areas where ICTs, energy and mobility overlap and will provide solutions that can be transferable to other cities.Emphasis will be placed on the application of the smart cities framework in select cities around the Mediterranean, “The Pilot Cities”.
