SAFE STRIP partners have met one last time before the project end in April 2020. The meeting was focused on the technical aspects of the project, especially the SAFE STRIP demo which is being prepared for the final event and the conclusion of the project pilots. Johanna Zmud, senior researcher at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) attended the Trento pilot showcase on the first day of the meeting – 11 February 2020 – which took place on a closed road track of Autostrade del Brennero, SAFE STRIP partner and host of the three-day meeting.
The free-flow motorway A22 is one of the main North-South corridors in Europe with a high percentage of Goods Transport, 20km south of Trento, between Rovereto Nord and Rovereto Sud toll stations. It spans 18 km in total (9km along A22 Autostrada del Brennero) and has 2 lanes per direction. 5 Roadside ITS Stations (RIS) are placed along the carriageway: 2 RIS at the level both toll stations, to reach any equipped vehicle with I2V communication before entering/exiting the site; 1 RIS close to Nogaredo gas station, to avoid Wrong Way Driving; 2 RIS are installed close to one another, to have an area of continuous coverage of ITS G5.
SAFE STRIP partners, together with SAB member Johanna Zmud, had the opportunity to see the pilot site composed of 3 consecutive sections of 8 strips covering the two lane road. Andrea Steccanella, CRF showed how the strips were sending the Wrong Way driving message to the SAFE STRIP system detecting the wrong way in both directions thanks to the yellow cables on the outer sides of the strips. The strips will soon travel to the Spanish pilot site at CIDAUT facilities which counts with several roads and crossings in which vehicles can circulate and park in a fully controlled environment. Then, the strips will finally travel to Athens in Greece where they will be preparing for the Final Event and Demonstration on 23 April 2020. Stay tuned!
