IRU begins work to define the Commercial Vehicle of the Future operating on forthcoming infrastructure.
IRU has today launched its innovative work to define the Commercial Vehicle of the Future operating on the infrastructure of the future. Bringing together a wide range of partners, the initiative seeks to ensure efficiency gains across the transport chain, a reduction of CO2 emissions and increased safety in road transport.
IRU’s working partners include European Commission and European parliament representatives from across the political spectrum, as well as leading non-governmental organisations from the environmental and road safety fields, transport industry stakeholders, vehicle manufacturers, transport technology specialists, academics and representatives from Europe’s major cities.
Marc Billiet, leading IRU’s work on this effort, said, “This is an exciting initiative that will chart the road ahead for the road transport industry. It will help define the sort of vehicles and infrastructure we want to see in 2030 and 2050.”
The initial meeting of partners, taking place in Brussels, will lay out terms of reference, working methodologies, roles and expected contributions.
Marc Billiet added, “The world of 2050 will be a very different place from today as global trends such as urbanisation, digitalisation, e-commerce, increased electrification and e-mobility impact our lives. One thing is sure, namely that transport will continue to be crucial to us all. We need to start working today to ensure that we maximise the benefits the transport system can provide to society in the future.”
