Brussels, 31 January, 2023. ERTICO – ITS Europe and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate the digital transformation of transportation. In joint collaboration, the parties will develop a framework for cooperative activities to address societal challenges focusing on sustainable, safe, and more efficient mobility of goods and people.

“We at ERTICO are pleased to embark on this new impetus with IEEE, a world-leading organisation in the field of Engineers and standardisation activities dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. This newly minted partnership holds a golden opportunity for both organisations to leverage the common goal of advancing the digital transformation of mobility and transport,” remarks Joost Vantomme, CEO at ERTICO – ITS Europe.

“IEEE is delighted to work with ERTICO to advance mobility solutions for the common good of inclusive climate-neutral transportation with zero accidents. The partnership has a huge potential to shape the green and digital transformation of transportation at a global scale”, states Konstantinos Karachalios, Managing Director of IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA).

The newly established partnership will endeavour to set a joint work plan to support each party. ERTICO’s work across four key focus areas, including Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCMA), Clean & Eco-Mobility, Urban Mobility, and Transport & Logistics, largely concur with the work streams of IEEE SA’s Mobility Practice, such as connected and highly automated driving, electrification and Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS). The MoU signing mirrors this dedicated vision of supporting knowledge exchange from both parties, and the parallel vision of promoting expertise will seek to advance technologies and innovative solutions for the future of mobility.

Both parties offer platforms, processes, and tools for stakeholders of the large mobility ecosystem to collaborate, co-create, trial, and test new technologies and novel mobility solutions. Each party has its unique strengths, but both parties are convinced that they can complement each other and that together they can achieve more.

“ERTICO and IEEE both share the vision of fostering technological innovation and excellence. Joining forces in the field of ITS and beyond is a big step for advancing the smart mobility agenda by complementing ERTICO’s hands-on expertise in rolling out Intelligent Transport Systems and Services with the long-standing standardization history of IEEE,” says Peter Schmitting, Innovation & Deployment Manager at ERTICO – ITS Europe.

“IEEE and ERTICO both agree that engineering is critical to addressing the world’s most important challenges in transportation, and that the pace of change is accelerating. Working together to jointly leverage ERTICO’s rich research and innovation programs and IEEE’s comprehensive portfolio of standards related initiatives will significantly advance the deployment of safer and more efficient, convenient and sustainable mobility solutions,” says Hermann Brand, Mobility Practice Lead at IEEE SA.
