30.06.2015_barcelona_spain_jasonparis_flickr_cc_by_2.0The Government of Catalonia will exempt electric cars from paying tolls on several motorways near Barcelona from 15 September.

The measure, which aims to encourage the uptake of electric vehicles, will benefit over 3 000 motorists.

Additional policies on parking and registration are being introduced to make electric vehicles more appealing, such as reducing registration tax for those who purchase new low-emission vehicles.

Drivers who want to avail of the scheme must register through an online portal called ecoviaT. By entering the details of their vehicle they can receive further benefits, such as legally being allowed to drive in bus lanes.
Through these measures, as well as through investing in public transport, the government hopes to reduce air pollution by 70 per cent by 2030.
