About 60 participants took part in the Instant Mobility stakeholder workshop organised in Istanbul Turkey on 26 June 2012 by the local consortium partner ISBAK one of the affiliated companies of the Istanbul Metropolis Municipality.
Transport problems are among the most important of Istanbul Municipality today. ISBAK has developed solutions for more intelligent transport in the city such as transport management systems information and monitoring systems for e.g. automatic accident perception.
Mobility especially in cities could be significantly improved if travellers goods and vehicles were interconnected in real time through the Internet. Instant Mobility is one of the 8 sector projects within the European Commission Future Internet Public-Private Partnership (FI-PPP ) Programme which aim is to accelerate technological development for the future internet and its adoption in “smart infrastructures” – such as smart energy grids smart cities smart environmental management systems and smart systems for mobility.
Instant Mobility is defining the technical and non-technical requirements for a virtual “Transport and Mobility Internet” platform and services (constituted in scenarios corresponding to the needs of key mobility actors).
After a general presentation of the project and its three scenarios on multimodal journey planning last mile delivery and traffic management in the cloud participants got an insight of what Future Internet is about and of the Future Internet Public-Private Partnership (FI-PPP) programme and the potential opportunities it represents for local stakeholders. Indeed Istanbul could be a pilot city in Phase 2 of the programme (call for proposals closing in October 2012) leading to effective trials and demonstrations in Phase 3 (call opening next year) and this is an opportunity for SMEs to push new innovative services with large funding available.
Instant Mobility “enablers” were also presented i.e. the facilities to be used to enable future internet technologies and services many of which already exist today but not at the right level. Today what needs collecting is the right data information about the traffic and position of the traveller which will be used by traffic operators to measure traffic density or identify bottlenecks. Indeed this will give so many possibilities in the various transport modes that it will improve mobility as a whole. The data provided however will be completely anonymised and thus unlinkable to any person in particular.
Regarding deliveries in the city knowing a truck’s exact position itinerary and load will allow new orders or pick ups “on the fly” and real time information on deviations (e.g. delays) will allow immediate rescheduling. Another possible service is the personalised delivery-place and -time based on sharing one’s personal calendar with transporters to determine the ideal time and place for delivering a package – all taking into account their delivery plan and your whereabouts.
Since fleet operators have already reached the maximum fuel efficiency achievable nowadays only these solutions can allow further reduction and thus there is a positive business case to use these technologies. Another positive business model is that the Instant Mobility platform will allow new services from external companies to be plugged into.
The next stakeholder workshop of Instant Mobility will be held in Toledo Spain on 2 October 2012 before a larger-scale pre-ITS World Congress workshop on 21 October 2012 in Vienna Austria targeted at a more international audience. An Instant Mobility prototype platform will be also be demonstrated at the ITS World Congress.
