Launched in May 2024, the EC-funded project EvoRoads is already working in full force to deliver its innovative approach to safety assessment frameworks. EvoRoads aims to accelerate the attainment of the ambitious EU Vision Zero goal of zero fatalities and serious injuries on European roads by 2050.

One of EvoRoads’ first tangible outputs is the deliverable Best practices and baseline catalogue of safety criteria which establishes a comprehensive baseline of road safety indicators compiled by reviewing legislative frameworks, safety practices, and the adoption of emerging technologies across multiple European nations, focusing particularly on the four projects’ pilots. Quantitatively it introduces a structured matrix of more than 100 road safety indicators, categorized by their relevance to ten categories of transport dimensions such as infrastructure, user behaviour, and emerging technologies. This Safety Criteria catalogue highlights advanced solutions in infrastructure monitoring and vehicle technology while identifying gaps in areas such as vulnerable road users (VRUs) and C-ITS.

Currently, the EvoRoads consortium is looking for feedback on this matrix. If you are a policymaker, an infrastructure manager, a mobility expert, or another relevant stakeholder, then have your say here until 28 February. Your contribution will help ensure EvoRoads’ alignment with European safety objectives.

EvoRoads objectives and goals

EvoRoads is informed by the Safe System approach, according to which death and serious injury in road collisions are not an inevitable price for mobility and are actually largely preventable.  ERTICO is therefore deeply invested in Evoroads, as safe mobility is key to its mission and values. For EvoRoads, ERTICO is coordinating the project, leading its communication and dissemination efforts, and overseeing the orchestration and planning of pilot activities.

EvoRoads aims to accelerate the attainment of the Vision Zero EU goal through a holistic framework of innovative models, tools and services that enable data-driven evolution of safety assessment frameworks, facilitate dynamic monitoring of cyber-physical infrastructures and promote the proactive warning for safety risks in complex environments.

At the operational level, EvoRoads defines safety criteria and KPIs quantification methodologies covering the entire spectrum of the “Safe System” approach and develops a connectivity platform where transport infrastructure assets are digitalised, and safety assessment services are functioning in a harmonious way. EvoRoads approach is validated through 4 living labs taking place in several locations in Spain, Italy, Latvia and Romania, addressing different types of infrastructure settings and road users in urban and rural environments.
