The United Kingdom’s Intelligent Transport Society’s Freight Interest Group is bringing Parliament’s attention to the many technological solutions that could help ensure efficient border crossings once the UK has left the European Union. The Transport Committee is examining the potential effects of Brexit on UK freight operations and is assessing the preparatory steps operators, their customers and Government need to take. It is asking for written evidence addressing the scale and challenges that may be faced, the steps being taken, sectors requiring funding and any new licencing, regulation and training that may be needed.
ITS (UK) itself does not have a view on Brexit, but is drawing together members’ views in order to explain to the Committee the many technology options now available to support the speedy and secure processing of freight across borders. ITS (UK) will provide written evidence on this topic and is welcoming members to contribute. Even if an organization is responding directly, it may also contribute to the ITS (UK) submission.
ITS (UK) Secretary General Jennie Martin commented, “With so much rumour, speculation and downright guesswork being reported about how border crossings will be handled post-Brexit, it is vital those who have practical ideas get heard by decision makers. With such a range of members, including academia, consultants and manufacturers involved in ITS (UK), it is not only a good opportunity for us to
contribute, but, I believe, vital we do in order to explain the excellent solutions our industry can offer.”
ITS (UK)’s submission must be delivered by 8 June so members are asked to give their views and ideas as soon as possible.
